Johansson makes St. Petersburg final

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Thomas Johansson of Sweden will get a chance to defend his title Sunday at the St. Petersburg Open tennis tournament in Russia.

In Saturday's semifinals, the 31-year-old Johansson, who is not seeded, beat wild card Igor Kunitsyn of Russia, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

He will face third-seeded Croat Mario Ancic in the title match.

In the other semi, Ancic beat unseeded Ernest Gulbis of Latvia, 6-2, 6-3.

Ancic has won 12 of his last 16 matches since returning last month from back and knee injuries.

Johansson improved to just 9-16 this year and is in search of his 10th career title.

The 22-year-old Ancic is going after his second title this season and third of his career.

Ancic and Johansson have met once before, with Ancic winning their match in Milan in 2004.

Gulbis was making his professional debut in this event.
