Federer makes Basel final

BASEL, Switzerland, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- No. 1 seed Roger Federer Saturday qualified for the title match of the Swiss Indoors tennis tournament in his hometown of Basel.

The top-ranked men's player in the world improved his 2006 record to 86-5 with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) victory against unseeded Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand in Saturday's semifinals.

He rose to 15-0 in his last 15 semifinal appearances.

When Federer plays third-seeded Chilean Fernando Gonzalez in the final, he will be trying to better his 23-match winning streak.

In the other semi, Gonzalez, the defending champion, topped another Swiss native, Stanislas Wawrinka, by scores of 6-4, 6-4.

The 26-year-old Gonzalez will attempt to capture his first title of the season.

He has won 24 of his last 30 matches, and has a record this season of 49-20, with finals appearances in tournaments at Vienna and Madrid.
