NFL: N.Y. Jets 31, Detroit 24

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Leon Washington ran for two touchdowns Sunday as the New York Jets beat Detroit, 31-24.

Washington carried the ball 20 times for 129 yards. Jerricho Cotchery caught seven passes for 79 yards, Justin McCareins caught a touchdown pass and Chad Pennington was 16-of-22 passing for 189 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

The Jets (4-3) have already equaled their win total from last season.

Detroit quarterback Jon Kitna went 22-for-36 for 269 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Mike Furrey scored once on nine catches for 109 yards, Roy Williams scored once on two catches for 29 yards and Kevin Jones made six receptions for 57 yards while adding 86 yards on 15 carries for the Lions (1-6).

The Jets survived a second half comeback for the second straight week.

Detroit pulled within a touchdown, 24-17, with just over nine minutes to play.
