Jay Williams waived by the Nets

HACKENSACK, N.J., Oct. 22 (UPI) -- The New Jersey Nets announced Sunday that the team has waived Jay Williams less than a month after the point guard signed with the team.

The waiving of the 25-year-old, who signed with the Nets Sept. 28, represents the most recent roadblock in Williams' attempt to jumpstart his National Basketball Association career after a devastating motorcycle accident in 2003, The Sports Network said.

After enjoying a successful freshman NBA season in 2002-03, which included being selected to the NBA's All-Rookie second team, Williams was injured so badly in a motorcycle accident that he has not appeared in an NBA season game since.

Williams had recuperated from the fractured pelvis, three torn knee ligaments and severed nerve in one of his legs, but never fully recaptured the ability he showed during his first NBA season.

Prior to the Nets waiving him, the former Duke Blue Devil had averaged 3.8 points for the New Jersey team during five preseason games.
