Reggie Howard leaves the Panthers

CHARLOTTESVILLE, N.C., Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Carolina Panthers cornerback Reggie Howard has left the team for personal reasons.

Coach John Fox did not unveil any specifics, but the speculation is that Howard, an un-drafted free agent, was unhappy about his recent lack of playing time.

"I would say somewhat, but I'm not going to get into details," Fox said when asked if he was surprised by Howard's move. He rejoined the Panthers this season after playing for the Miami Dolphins the last two years.

"There's always that possibility," Fox said Thursday when asked if he felt Howard would come back.

In this his seventh NFL season, Howard has career totals of 257 tackles, 4½ sacks, and six interceptions.

"We'll get a roster exemption (and) we've got some options," Fox said.

Richard Marshall has been Carolina's starting left cornerback.

Carolina has 10 days before it must put Howard on the reserve list, which would end his season.
