Nadal ousted from Madrid Masters

MADRID, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- No. 2-seeded and defending champion Rafael Nadal was bumped from the Madrid Masters tennis tournament with a quarterfinals loss Friday.

Nadal, from Spain, was knocked from the tournament in straight sets by 11th-seeded Tomas Berdych, who advanced to Saturday's semifinals with a 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) victory.

World No. 1 Roger Federer ran his match record to 80-5 this year with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) victory over American Robby Ginepri. He is the second player -- joining Ivan Lendl -- to win 80 matches in consecutive years.

Federer meets fourth-seeded David Nalbandian, from Argentina, in Saturday's semifinals. Nalbandian survived a tight 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-2) match with Russia's Marat Safin.

Friday's fourth quarterfinal was between 10th-seeded Chilean Fernando Gonzalez and 15th-seeded Serbian Novak Djokovic.

The tournament, the eighth of nine Masters Series events this year, wraps up with the championship match Sunday.
