Mauresmo has shoulder ailment

ZURICH, Switzerland, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Amelie Mauresmo withdrew from the Zurich Open tennis tournament in Zurich, Switzerland because of a nagging right shoulder ailment.

The native of France and top-ranked women's tennis player in the world withdrew before Thursday's scheduled quarterfinal match against Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia.

Her withdrawal came after she struggled to beat Australia's Samantha Stosur in three sets in her opening round match on Wednesday.

The same injury forced her to withdraw from the Porsche Grand Prix in Germany two weeks ago.

"Obviously it's very frustrating for me," she said on the WTA Tour's Web site. "I'm trying to finish the season No. 1, and I think maybe I didn't give myself enough time to heal after Stuttgart. The matches in Moscow (at last week's Kremlin Cup) and here haven't helped and I aggravated it in the second set of my match against Stosur."

Mauresmo is the reigning Wimbledon and Australian Open champion.
