ZURICH, Switzerland, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Local-favorite and fifth-seeded Martina Hingis posted a first-round victory Monday in the Zurich Open in Switzerland.
Hingis, originally from Slovakia but who lives in Switzerland, rolled past Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-0, 7-5 in a match that took 75 minutes.

In the other match on the first day of the Zurich Open, Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over France's Mary Pierce.
Srebotnik advances to a second-round match with fourth seeded Elena Dementieva, who along with other top seeds Amelie Mauresmo, Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova, had a first-round bye.
