ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Oct. 15 (UPI) -- The Web site of the women's tennis tour reported Sunday that a committee has been formed to address the issue of player withdrawals next year.
The WTA noted that top player withdrawals in women's tennis have reached an all-time high this year and that more top players are pulling out of the most important events with injury or fatigue than ever.
"Fans and tournaments deserve to see the top players and to be able to count on them to show up, but injuries and withdrawals from a season that overtaxes our players is hurting the fan experience," said tour CEO Larry Scott. "Women's professional tennis needs to enact bold reforms in the name of player health and the continued global growth of the game."
Scott added rule changes will be finalized no later than the Tour's end-of-the-year board meeting at the Sony Ericsson Championships in early November.
