ATLANTA, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Ray Whitney scored a goal with 0.5 seconds remaining Friday night as reigning NHL champion Carolina beat Atlanta, 4-3, for its first win of the new season.
Brind'Amour's first assist of the game was the 600th of his career.
Jon Sim scored two goals; Bobby Holik scored once; Glen Metropolit, Vitaly Vishnevski, Slava Kozlov, Scott Mellanby, and Andy Sutton all had one assist; while goalie Kari Lehtonen gave up four goals on 33 shots for the Thrashers (3-1-1), who suffered their first loss.
After five games, Atlanta has seven points.
Carolina has three points in its four games.
On the power play, the teams combined to go scoreless on nine chances.
