NHL: New Jersey 7, Toronto 6

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Oct. 12 (UPI) -- John Madden's shootout goal Thursday night was the game-winner as New Jersey edged Toronto, 7-6.

Brian Gionta scored three goals, including two on the power play in the third period; John Madden had two goals and one assist; Sergei Brylin scored once; Jay Pandolfo, Scott Gomez, and Paul Martin each added two assists; and goalie Martin Brodeur was able to make 24 saves on 30 shots for the Devils (2-1-0), who have four points in their three games.

Matthew Stajan had two goals and one assist; Jeff O'Neill, Chad Kilger, Darcy Tucker and Alexei Ponikarovsky all scored once; Pandolfo and Paul Martin each had two assists; while goaltender Jean-Sebastien Aubin gave up six goals on 30 shots for the Maple Leafs (2-1-2), who suffered their first loss of the new season.

On the power play, New Jersey was 2-for-5 and Toronto was 1-for-1.
