Vickers to get extra security at Concord

CONCORD, N.C., Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Brian Vickers will get added security Saturday when he drives at the Nextel Cup's Bank of America 500 in Concord, N.C.

More security was ordered for the Lowe's Motor Speedway because Vickers initiated a major crash near the end of the UAW-Ford 500 race last Sunday at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.

He recorded his first Nextel Cup victory, but the crash may have cost Jeff Gordon a chance to win the race, and likely prevented teammate Jimmie Johnson from having an opportunity to make a serious challenge in the battle to win the points race.

"We want to make sure Brian has an uninterrupted weekend here and that he is able focus on his driving duties," said Lowe's Motor Speedway Chairman Bruton Smith. "We will offer security escorts in and out of the speedway and anywhere he feels he needs our assistance."

Vickers reportedly has received death threats this week.
