TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Sun Tiantian of China Sunday won a straight-set victory over home favorite Iroda Tulyaganova in the final of the Tashkent Open in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Sun won the match by scores of 6-2, 6-4, to capture her first career WTA singles title. The victory was worth $22,925.
In singles play this year, Sun, who is a doubles specialist, had not advanced past the second round of any tournament before this week.
Sun has won nine career doubles titles, including the 2004 Olympic gold medal. Her previous best singles finishes were a pair of quarterfinal appearances in 2005.
Tulyaganova, who won the tournament in 2000, was a wild-card entry.
