NHL: Washington 5, Carolina 2

WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Alexander Semin scored three goals Saturday night to lead the Washington Capitals past the Carolina Hurricanes, 5-2.

Alexander Ovechkin scored the other two goals, including one on the power play. Brian Pothier had three assists and goaltender Olaf Kolzig made 25 saves on 27 shots for the Capitals (1-1-0), who rebounded from a season-opening loss to the New York Rangers Thursday night.

Andrew Ladd and Niclas Wallin each scored once for Carolina. Tim Gleason, Justin Williams, Scott Walker and Eric Belanger all had one assist and Cam Ward gave up five goals on 35 shots for the reigning champion Hurricanes, who have started the new season with two losses and a tie.

On the power play, Washington was 2-for-8 while Carolina was 1-for-5.
