Dredge chips to Dunhill halfway lead

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Bradley Dredge turned in a 4-under-par 67 Friday for a 3-stroke lead halfway through the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland.

Dredge's 67 came on Carnoustie, one of three courses used for the tournament, after he posted a first-round 64 Thursday at Kingsbarns.

Charl Schwartzel, who shot 67 Friday, and Johan Edfors, who had a 70, were tied for second at 10-under par 134 after playing St. Andrews' Old Course. Vijay Singh, Simon Dyson and Padraig Harrington were tied for fourth at 9-under-par.

Dredge birdied three of his first five holes and had just one bogey on the round. He was helped with a couple of chips that holed out.

"I got off to a good start again and hit some really good shots," Dredge said. "There were a couple of iffy shots later but I scrambled well and chipping in twice is not something that happens often."

Players rotate among Carnoustie, Kingsbarns and the Old Course for the first three rounds. All players will be on the Old Course for Sunday's final round.
