Mirza moves to Tashkent quarterfinals

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Third-seeded Sania Mirza swept to a straight-set victory Thursday in earning a quarterfinal berth in the $145,000 Tashkent Open in Uzbekistan.

Mirza, from India, defeated the Czech Republic's Hana Sromova, 6-4, 7-5, and advanced to a Friday match with sixth-seeded Russian Olga Poutchkova, who dispatched France's Olivia Sanchez, 7-5, 6-1, in her Thursday match.

In a pair of 6-4, 6-4 second-round decisions Thursday, Belarusian Victoria Azaranka eliminated Slovakian qualifier Dominika Cibulkova and China's Sun Tiantian beat Belarusian Tatiana Poutchek.

In addition to the Mirza-Poutchkova match, Friday's play will see top-seeded Italian Maria Elena Camerin going against Azarenka, eighth-seeded Russian Anastassia Rodionova versus Sun and Tashkent's Iroda Tulyaganova against the Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko.

The tournament concludes this weekend.
