Gicquel defeats top-seed Ferrer in France

METZ, France, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Frenchman Marc Gicquel upset top-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer in Monday's opening-round action at the Open de Moselle in France.

Gicquel, a wild card, defeated the world No. 15 Ferrer 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

Another Frenchman pulled an upset on Day 1, as Florent Serra defeated eighth-seeded Swede Robin Soderling 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.

In other first-round play, Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez beat Italian Davide Sanguinetti 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-0 and Italian Daniele Bracciali came from behind to beat German Philipp Kohlschreiber 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Garcia-Lopez will meet Gicquel in the round of 16.
