PALERMO, Italy, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Fernando Verdasco lost Friday to Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo in the quarterfinals of the Campionati Internazionali di Sicilia Tennis Tournament in Palermo, Italy.
The scores in the match between the fellow Spaniards and the first and eighth seeds, respectively, were 6-3, 6-4.
Also, reigning two-time runner-up Filippo Volandri of Italy, the second seed, beat unseeded Albert Montanes of Spain, 6-4, 6-2; unseeded Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador topped No. 3 seed Gilles Simon of France, 6-0, 6-1; and No. 4 Nicolas Almagro of Spain beat unseeded Martin Vassallo-Arguello of Argentina, 6-2, 6-2.
In Saturday's semifinals, Volandri goes against Almagro; and Ramirez Hidalgo faces Lapentti.
Sunday's tournament finals winner will earn $56,000.
