NEW YORK, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- New York Mets pitcher Pedro Martinez has torn a tendon in his left calf, taking him out of the game for the rest of the season.
Mets General Manager Omar Minaya said the injury was discovered by team doctors after Martinez complained of stiffness in his right calf, which he had previously injured, The New York Times reported Friday. Doctors examined his left calf after Martinez said he felt pain there, too.
"He did mention that he felt some pain in the other leg," Minaya said. "The bottom line is he's not going to be available."
Minaya said the pitcher will not require surgery but will need an estimated four to six weeks of rest to recover.
"There was no doubt he was banged up all year," Minaya said. "I knew he wasn't the regular Pedro."
Martinez had a 9-8 record and 4.48 earned run average this season. Since his Sept. 24, 1992, Major League debut, Martinez is 206-92 with a 2.81 ERA and 2,998 strikeouts.
Manager Willie Randolph announced earlier that Orlando Hernandez will start the first game of the National League division series and Tom Glavine will start Game 2.
