BANGKOK, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Ivan Ljubicic was among a series of seeded players who won Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the $550,000 Thailand Open.
Ljubicic, from Croatia, stopped Germany's Benjamin Becker 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 to earn a quarterfinal match with seventh-seeded American Robby Ginepri, who defeated Thailand's Danai Udomchoke 6-3, 6-3.
Also Thursday, American James Blake, the tournament's No. 3 seed, ran past Monaco's Benjamin Balleret 6-3, 6-2; fifth-seeded Finn Jarkko Nieminen was a 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 winner over Canadian Frank Dancevic and eighth seeded Thai Paradorn Srichaphan got by Russia's Mikhail Ledovskikh 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
In other matches, Russian Marat Safin beat France's Julien Benneteau 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (3-7), 6-2; German qualifier Mischa Zverev topped Germany's Rainier Schuettler 7-6 (9-7) 7-5; and Tim Henman won over Alex Bogdanovic 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 in a battle of Englishmen.
The tournament continues with quarterfinals Friday and semis Saturday ahead of Sunday's championship match, where the champion will win $76,500.
