Police: Terrell Owens attempted suicide

DALLAS, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Dallas police Wednesday said Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens attempted suicide by swallowing dangerous amounts of pain medication.

The report said Owens answered affirmatively when police asked if he had intentionally tried to harm himself, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

A source with the Cowboys told the Star-Telegram Owens had suffered an allergic reaction to pain medication and was taken to Baylor Medical Center Tuesday. He was released from the hospital early Wednesday morning.

Owens had been given the medication after he broke a bone in his right ring finger during a Sept. 17 game. A plate was screwed into the bone the following day to allow it to heal without further damage. However, Cowboys coach Bill Parcells revealed Sept. 20 "the pain medicine made (Owens) ill."

The receiver's status was undetermined for Sunday's game against the Tennessee Titans.
