Hingis wins in Korean Open first round

SEOUL, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Martina Hingis, coming off a victory last week in India, claimed a straight-set, first-round victory Wednesday in the $145,000 Korea Open.

Hingis, seeded first in the Seoul tournament, was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Denmark's Carolina Wozniacki. Hingis advanced to a second-round match with India's Sania Mirza, who beat South Korea's Ye-Ra Lee 3-6, 6-0, 6-0 Wednesday.

In second-round matches Wednesday, fifth-seeded Vera Zvonareva eliminated Finland's Emma Laine 6-4, 6-0; Japan's Akiko Morigami topped her countrywoman Aiko Nakamura 7-5, 6-2; and Greek Eleni Daniilidou overcame Russian Vera Dushevina 1-6, 6-1, 6-0.

The tournament continues through Sunday, when the winner will claim a first-place check of $22,900.
