Baseball suspends Tampa Bay pitching coach

NEW YORK, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Pitching coach Mike Butcher of Tampa Bay Wednesday was hit with a three-game suspension for his inappropriate actions Sept. 25 against the New York Yankees.

Butcher also received an undisclosed fine from Major League Baseball for allegedly making inappropriate comments to the umpiring crew in that incident.

He was ejected for arguing balls and strikes with home plate umpire Alfonso Marquez, and made physical contact with third base umpire Larry Young.

"They based (the suspension) on what they saw, I guess," Butcher said on the Devil Rays' Web site.

On Tuesday, he said he did not expect to be suspended for his actions, despite the fact that physical contact with umpires is against baseball regulations.

The suspension started with Wednesday night's game against Boston.
