MLB: Washington 5, N.Y. Mets 1

NEW YORK, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Tony Armas Jr. gave up one run and five hits over six innings Sunday afternoon as Washington beat the New York Mets, 5-1.

Felipe Lopez and Ryan Zimmerman each had two hits and one RBI; Denny Mateo hit an RBI double; a run scored when Armas hit into a double play in the top of the second; Alfonso Soriano hit a sacrifice fly; and Ryan Church had a run and two hits for the Nationals (68-87), who have split their last six games.

Armas (9-12) had no walks and four strikeouts.

Jose Valentin hit a solo home run, and four other players each had one hit for the Mets (93-62), who have won only twice in six games since clinching the NL East Division crown last Monday.

Losing pitcher Steve Trachsel (15-8) gave up three runs and eight hits in five innings with three walks and one strikeout.
