MLB: Boston 7, Toronto 1

TORONTO, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- In a spot start Friday night, Julian Tavarez pitched a complete-game seven-hitter as the Boston Red Sox beat Toronto, 7-1.

Tavarez (4-4), normally a reliever, walked one and struck out one.

He was making his fifth start of the season.

Mike Lowell hit a two-run homer, Alex Gonzalez doubled twice and drove in three runs, and Mark Loretta and Dustin Pedroia both hit RBI singles for the Red Sox (83-71), who have won two in a row and six of their last 10 games.

Aaron Hill hit an RBI single, and Alex Rios had two hits for the Blue Jays (80-73), who have lost three of their last four games.

Losing pitcher Ted Lilly (14-13) gave up five hits and five runs in 5 1/3 innings with four walks and eight strikeouts.

Toronto's 16-game winner, Roy Halladay, is done for the year because of a right forearm strain.
