Melzer won the first set, 6-4, against eighth-seeded Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu, before his opponent retired with an ankle injury.

Volandri has just one title, winning at St. Poelten in 2004. He holds an 8-2 record in Bucharest, having reached the semifinals in 2004 and the second round last year before losing to Serra.

Melzer, who has yet to claim an ATP title, will be playing in his fourth career final. He lost to American Mardy Fish in the final of the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships in Houston in April.
