Tursunov, Serra advance at Romania tennis

BUCHAREST, Romania, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Russian Dmitry Tursunov and defending champion Florent Serra of France had first-round wins Tuesday at the BCR Open Romania tennis tournament.

Tursunov saved three match points to beat German Alexander Waske 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, while second-seeded Serra defeated Argentine Juan-Martin Aranguren 6-1, 6-0.

Serra defeated two-time runner-up Igor Andreev of Russia in last year's Bucharest finale.

Tursunov will meet Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the second round, while Serra will play Argentine Martin Vassallo Arguello.

Third-seeded Carlos Moya, former world No. 1 Spaniard, defeated Peruvian Luis Horna 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3), 7-5.

Also, No. 5 Italian Filippo Volandri beat countryman Simone Vagnozzi 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, No. 7 German Florian Mayer beat Italian Potito Starace 6-2, 6-3 and No. 8 Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu beat German Simon Greul 6-1, 6-1.
