MLB: Boston 9, Kansas City 3

BOSTON, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- David Ortiz hit his 48th home run of the season Sunday afternoon to help the Boston Red Sox beat Kansas City, 9-3.

Ortiz hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning and had three runs and two hits.

Wily Mo Pena had three hits and two RBI; Mike Lowell had two hits and two RBI; Mark Loretta had two runs, two hits and one RBI; and Gabe Kapler had two hits and one RBI for the Red Sox (76-67), who broke a three-game losing streak -- and a five-game skid against Kansas City.

Winner Julian Tavarez (3-4) surrendered three runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings with two walks and five strikeouts.

Emil Brown had two hits and two RBI, and David DeJesus hit an RBI single for the Royals (54-90), who were trying for their first sweep of at least three games at Fenway Park since April 1996.

The losing pitcher was Mark Redman (9-9).
