CLEMSON, S.C., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Anthony Waters, who returned to Clemson in South Carolina as a fifth-year senior, ended his college football career when he tore a knee ligament.
The Tigers defeated Florida Atlantic 54-6 on Saturday.
Waters undergoes reconstructive knee surgery soon. The injury and operation will put him out of action for the rest of the season.
"This is certainly a major loss for our football team," head coach Tommy Bowden said. "We have now lost two starting linebackers. Anthony is a terrific player. I am confident we will have players who will respond."
The Tigers, ranked 18th nationally, play Boston College next week.
Waters, a contender for the Butkus Award, made 109 tackles last season.
