FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y., Aug. 31 (UPI) -- The top three women seeds won, but No. 8 Martina Hingis was ousted in Thursday's second round at the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadow, N.Y.
Top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo of France beat American Meghann Shaughnessy, 6-4, 6-3. Second-seeded Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne cruised past American Vania King, 6-1, 602. And third-seeded Maria Sharapova of Russia blasted France's Emilie Loit, 6-0, 6-1.
No. 5 Russian Nadia Petrova beat Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain, 6-1, 6-1. No. 6 Svetlana Kuznetsova had an easy win over American Lauren Albanese, 6-1, 6-1. No. 7 Swiss Patty Schnyder beat Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden, 6-3, 7-5. And No. 9 Czech Nicole Vaidisova beat Russian Alina Jidkova, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Hingis, seeded eighth in her comeback campaign, was eliminated by Virginie Razzano of France, 6-2, 6-4.
Tenth seeded American Lindsay Davenport made easy work of Croat Jelena Kostanic, 6-0, 6-0.
