EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Brandon Jacobs rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries Thursday night as the New York Giants beat New England, 31-23.
Jacobs' touchdowns came on a 57-yard run in the second quarter and a 2-yard run in the third. Back-up quarterback Jared Lorenzen threw for 116 yards, Willie Ponder made three catches for 51 yards and Darcy Johnson scored on a 26-yard pass from second-string quarterback Tim Hasselbeck in the fourth quarter for the Giants, who were unbeaten in their four preseason games.
Matt Cassel was 15-of-28 for 196 yards, for New England. Patrick Cobbs had 45 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries, Heath Evans rushed for 34 yards and a score on 12 carries and Brandon Childress made six catches for 116 yards for the Patriots (2-2).
In the regular season opener, New England plays host to Buffalo on Sept. 10, the same night that the Giants are at home against Indianapolis.
