SACRAMENTO, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Yolanda Griffith scored 18 points as the Sacramento Monarchs beat the Los Angeles Sparks, 64-61, Thursday night in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals.
Nicole Powell had 17 points and Kara Lawson scored 13 points and had five assists for the Monarchs, who lead the best-of-three series, 1-0.

Mwadi Mabika scored 23 points and Temeka Johnson had 14 for the Sparks.
Game 2 is slated for Saturday at Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, Calif.
