CHICAGO, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Juan Encarnacion hit a three-run homer Sunday afternoon to help St. Louis beat the Chicago Cubs, 5-3.
Chris Duncan hit a solo homer; Scott Spiezio hit an RBI single; and Encarnacion had two hits for the Cardinals (66-57), who have won three of their last four games.
Winner Chris Carpenter (12-6) scattered two runs and seven hits over eight innings with no walks and eight strikeouts.
Jason Isringhausen recorded his 30th save.
Aramis Ramirez hit a solo homer; Matt Murton hit an RBI single; Jacque Jones knocked in the other run; and Juan Pierre had a run and three hits for the Cubs (53-70), who have split their last 10 games.
Losing pitcher Juan Mateo (1-1) gave up four runs and seven hits in seven innings with three walks and five strikeouts.
