ANAHEIM, Calif., Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Angels rookie Jered Weaver led his team to a 3-0 win over Seattle Friday to become the first American League pitcher to start 9-0 since Whitey Ford in 1950.

The Los Angeles right-hander yielded three hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over seven innings in Anaheim. Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth for his 33rd save.

Mike Napoli hit a two-run homer and Vladimir Guerrero went 2-for-4 with a run batted in for the Angels, which have won two straight and three of their last four contests.

Raul Ibanez went 2-for-4 and Adrian Beltre went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 14 games for Seattle, which has lost a Major League record 18 straight games versus AL West opponents.

Felix Hernandez (10-11) was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in six innings for the Mariners, which have lost their last nine contests.

Only four other pitchers in history have won their first nine decisions, including Livan Hernandez (9-0), Kirk Reuter (10-0), Ford (9-0) and Hooks Wiltse (12-0) for the 1904 Giants.
