ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., Aug. 12 (UPI) -- The Tin Man returned to the Arlington Million after a three-year absence Saturday and the 8-year-old won the race's 24th renewal.
Three years ago The Tin Man finished sixth in a 13 horse field. Saturday the gelding took the lead going under the wire for the first time.
He was pressured by Manhattan Handicap winner Cacique, Major Rhythm and 2-1 favorite English Channel.
The Tin Man, ridden by Victor Espinoza, set a moderate pace and held on for the win, finishing 1 3/4 lengths ahead of Cacique.
Soldier Hollow was third and English Channel, winner of the United Nations Handicap, was fourth in the 10-horse field.
The time for the 1 1/4 miles was 2:01.35 on a firm turf.
The victory was worth $600,000, to bring The Tin Man's career earnings to almost $3 million. He has won 11 of 26 lifetime starts.
