Mayfield terminated by Evernham

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y., Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Jeremy Mayfield was fired Friday as a Nascar driver for Evernham Motorsports, losing his spot in a New York race.

The company had already announced that Bill Elliott would drive this weekend at Watkins Glen. Ray Evernham made Mayfield's future clear with three words, "He's been terminated," Motorsports.com reported.

"When performance is not up to par there's always frustration on both sides," Evernham said. "But the decision was primarily made based on the performance of the car and not being able to get that any better. In fact, it was getting worse."

Elliott Sadler, who has cut his ties with Robert Yates Racing and the No. 38 M&M's Ford team, could be behind the wheel of the No. 19 Evernham Dodge in Michigan next week.
