Michael Curry promoted by NBA

NEW YORK, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- NBA Development League chief Michael Curry has been named the NBA's vice president of basketball operations.

Commissioner David Stern said Curry will continue to have responsibility for player development with the D-League, the NBA equivalent of baseball's farm teams. He will also be in charge of NBA basketball operations.

Curry played in the NBA for 11 seasons and served as president of the Players' Association from 2000 to 2004. He retired in 2005.

"Michael is widely respected by teams and players in both the NBA and the D- League for his knowledge of the game and his leadership qualities," Joel Litvin, NBA president of league and basketball operations, said. "He has done a tremendous job for the D-League and this is a great opportunity for us to utilize his talents at the NBA level as well."
