China to sell 7 million Olympics tickets

BEIJING, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- China plans to offer more than 7 million tickets to the 2008 Summer Olympics, and most of the tickets will be inexpensive, the organizing committee says.

"Excluding those reserved for the 'Olympic family,' which includes sponsors, the International Olympic Committee and sports-federation officials, over 7 million tickets will be sold to the general public," said Liu Qi, president of the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee, Xinhua reported.

Tickets will go on sale to the general public in the first half of 2007, he said.

"Except for the opening and closing ceremonies and a few popular events, the majority of tickets will be very, very cheap," Liu said, adding that Olympics organizers took into consideration "the situations of China" when setting the prices.

"We hope that all Chinese have a chance to come and watch the Games," he said, the news agency reported.
