Cubs' Kerry Wood done for the year

CHICAGO, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- A shoulder ailment will prevent right-hander Kerry Wood of the Chicago Cubs from pitching again this season.

An MRI on the shoulder on July 7 revealed that Wood has a torn rotator cuff, but he has decided on rest instead of surgery.

"I'm probably not going to be coming back as a starter," Wood said about his future Wednesday on the team's Web site. "I need to go out and pitch and I need to get some innings. I need to be healthy. Probably the best way to do that for me is to limit the innings, limit the pitches until I'm comfortable and positive I can make 34, 35 starts with 110 pitches every fifth day."

This season, the 28-year-old Wood was able to pitch only 19 2/3 innings before being placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 7.

He has a career record of 71-56.
