Varitek placed on the disabled list

BOSTON, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- The Boston Red Sox could be without star catcher Jason Varitek for as long as six weeks because of his left knee injury.

He suffered a partially torn ligament in the knee in Monday's game against Cleveland. The two-time all-star, who is referred to as the "heart and soul" of the team, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.

"He's our leader, a guy that we look to win games for us," said outfielder Gabe Kapler on the Red Sox Web site. "We're gonna miss him, but he's going to be back sooner than people expect him to be back because he's Jason. He's going to work ... and he's going to be quick."

Varitek, who appeared in his 1,000th game as a catcher in the contest, is batting .243 with 11 home runs and 50 RBI this season.

His roster spot has been filled by Ken Huckaby, who was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket.
