Dodgers designate Cruz for assignment

CINCINNATI, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers designated outfielder Jose Cruz Jr. for assignment Tuesday prior to the club's game in Cincinnati.

Cruz, 32, became expendable following the emergence of rookie Andre Ethier and the recent acquisition of Julio Lugo from Tampa Bay.

Cruz batted .233 with five home runs and 17 RBI in 86 games this season with the Dodgers. For his career, the former Gold Glove winner has hit .249 with 198 homers and 602 RBI in 10 major league seasons with Seattle, Toronto, San Francisco, Tampa Bay, Arizona, Boston and Los Angeles.
