Lee Westwood leads at Hamburg

HAMBURG, Germany, July 27 (UPI) -- England's Lee Westwood tied the course record with a 9-under 63 in Thursday's first round of the Players Championship of Europe in Hamburg, Germany.

The score was two shots better than the 7-under 65 shot last year by American John Daly.

"My main objective at the moment is to just play well and try and play my way into the side over the next four tournaments that I've got left," said Westwood, who is trying to qualify for the European Ryder Cup team. "If I do that, that would be great."

South Africa's Retief Goosen and Robert Karlsson of Sweden tied for second place, one shot back at 8-under 64.

Gregory Havret and Jean-Francois Remesy of France, and Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam of Wales, are tied for fourth at 7-under 65.

Defending champion Niclas Fasth of Sweden is among a group of 25 players tied for 21st place at 4-under 68.
