Gaudio makes the quarters at Kitzbuhel

KITZBUHEL, Austria, July 27 (UPI) -- Gaston Gaudio of Argentina and Spain's Fernando Verdasco were among Thursday's winners in the third round of the Generali Open in Kitzbuhel, Austria.

Gaudio, the defending champion and No. 4 seed, rallied to overcome unseeded Denis Gremelmayr of Germany, 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (9-7), 6-0. Verdasco, the fifth seed, who was beaten by Gaudio in last year's final, was a 6-4, 7-5, winner over No. 10 Max Mirnyi of Belarus.

Another former tournament winner, Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador, topped Austria's Stefan Koubek, 6-3, 6-3. No. 7 Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina trounced qualifier Dusan Vemic of Serbia, 6-4, 6-0.

No. 8 Mikhail Youzhny of Russia downed Edgardo Massa of Argentina, 6-4, 6-1. And Austria's Jurgen Melzer beat Andrei Pavel of Romania, 7-5, 6-3.
