UMAG, Croatia, July 24 (UPI) -- Spaniard Albert Portas upset second-seeded countryman Juan Carlos Ferrero in three sets Monday during first-round play at the Croatia Open in Umag.
Portas defeated Ferrero 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (5-7), 7-5. It was just the second time in seven meetings that Portas has won against Ferrero.

In other seeded action, Czech Lukas Dlouhy beat No. 7 Frenchman Julien Benneteau 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 and No. 8 Italian Filippo Volandri was leading Marc Gicquel 6-1 when Gicquel retired from their bout with a wrist injury.
Other first-round winners were Czech Jan Hernych, German Simon Greul, Czech Jiri Vanek and Croatian wild card Marin Cilic, who beat Russian Evgeny Korolev in three sets.
