GREENSBORO, Ga., July 21 (UPI) -- Kevin Brophy, a guard on the men's basketball team at the University of Georgia, was killed in a car accident during a thunderstorm.
Police said the accident occurred Thursday afternoon near Greensboro, Ga.
"From what I know, he was leaving Athens to go back to the family he lived with (in Savannah)," Greene County (Ga.) Sheriff Chris Houston told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "Some severe weather had come through the area. The DOT had to be called out to remove some trees from the road."
The 6-foot-1 inch native of Melbourne, Australia, who moved to Savannah as an exchange student in 2003, would have been a sophomore next season.
"We are devastated by the loss of Kevin," Coach Dennis Felton said on the school's Web site. "Kevin was a beloved teammate and a pillar of our program. We will miss his undeniable optimism, leadership and sincere friendship."
Brophy, a former walk-on, was awarded an athletic scholarship before last season.
