Four seeds fall at Palermo

PALERMO, Italy, July 19 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy was beaten Wednesday by German Julia Schruff 6-1, 7-5 in the second round of the Palermo International in Italy.

Also, little-known Aravane Rezai of France beat No. 3 seed Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands, 6-4, 6-3; No. 5 Anna Smashnova of Belarus lost, 7-5, 6-3, to wild card Tathiana Garbin of Italy; and sixth-seeded Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic was ousted by unseeded Roberta Vinci of Italy, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).

Koukalova was the event's runner-up in 2005.

Garbin recently was the first Italian woman in the open era to beat a world No. 1 when she topped Justine Henin-Hardenne in the second round of the French Open.

The second round will conclude with five more matches Thursday. One of them involves two-time defending champion and second-seeded Annabel Medina Garrigues of Spain.
