Go Between wins $1M Virginia Derby

NEW KENT, Va., July 15 (UPI) -- Go Between ran down pacesetter Kip Deville Saturday to win the $1 million Virginia Derby by two-lengths at Colonial Downs.

The three-year-old owned by Peter Vegso and trained by Bill Mott went off a 3-1 second choice with Proudinsky and covered the mile and a quarter turf track in 1:59.74.

Seaside Retreat was second and Spider Power finished third.

Scratches of favorite Steppenwolfer and Cinema Handicap winner Genre cut the 12-horse field to 10 at post time. Go Between paid $8.60, $4.20 and $3.40.

Aunt Henny won the $200,000 Virginia Oaks by a nose over May Night. The three-year-old filly covered the 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:47.11

The Virginia Derby is the second race of the $5 million Grand Slam of Grass. Showing Up won the Colonial Turf Cup in June and Go Between was third. The $400,000 Secretariat Stakes will be held at Arlington International Racecourse outside Chicago Aug. 12.
