Rain shortens competition at Swiss Open

GSTAAD, Switzerland, July 12 (UPI) -- Fernando Verdasco of Spain downed Italy's Daniele Bracciali, 6-3, 6-1, Wednesday in the second round of the rainy Swiss Open in Gstaad, Switzerland.

German Philipp Kohlschreiber beat unseeded Jean Novak of the Czech Republic, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, and will meet the third-seeded Verdasco in a third-round match on Thursday.

Only four second-round matches were completed before rain suspended play Wednesday.

Top-seed Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia plays a delayed second-round match against wild card Marco Chiudinelli, and sixth-seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain meets Ruben Hidalgo in a match postponed from Wednesday until Thursday.
