Muller and Spadea upset in Newport

NEWPORT, R.I., July 10 (UPI) -- Fourth-seeded Gilles Muller of Luxembourg and fifth-seeded American Vincent Spadea were upset Monday in the first round of the Hall of Fame Championships.

Muller lost to Chile's Paul Capdeville, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2, and Spadea was defeated by American Robert Kendrick, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Kendrick pushed world No. 2 Rafael Nadal to five sets in a second-round match at Wimbledon.

Sixth seed Jurgen Melzer of Austria beat Romania's Razvan Sabau, 7-5, 7-5; Russian Igor Kunitsyn beat American Bobby Reynolds, 7-5, 6-2; and South African Rik De Voest defeated Poland's Lukasz Kubot, 6-2, 6-2.
