MLB: N.Y. Mets 17, Florida 3

NEW YORK, July 8 (UPI) -- Jose Valentin knocked in seven runs Saturday night as the New York Mets trounced Florida, 17-3, in the night-cap of a doubleheader.

The Marlins won the opener, 3-2.

Valentin hit a grand slam homer and a three-run triple; Cliff Floyd added a two-run homer and drove in five; Paul Lo Duca had three runs and two hits; and Endy Chavez had two runs and three hits for the Mets (52-36), who have split their last four games.

The winner was Michael Pelfrey (1-0), who surrendered five hits and three runs in five innings in his major league debut.

Mike Jacobs and losing pitcher Ricky Nolasco each drove in a run, while both Jacobs and Alfredo Amezaga had two hits for the Marlins (38-47), who have split their last six games.

Nolasco gave up nine runs and reliever Jason Vargas gave up the other eight.
